Hi there Ladies,

I need a little help from those of you going through the IVF journey. DH and I have been recommended to try IVF as I have stage 4 endo which has damaged my left ovary quite severely and blocked my right tube. My gynae has referred me to Dr Coetsee at Natal Fertility Clinic and advised us to save about R70 000.

How much has a round of IVF cost you ladies at your respective clinics? If your round fails does this mean you pay the full price for the next round?

I will appreciate any advice you ladies can give me.

Much love xx

It depends on whether it is a fresh cycle, a frozen cycle, whether they do ICSI (injecting the little sperm into the egg) etc.

Fresh cycles costs more (you need to pay for all the meds to stimulate your ovaries - which you save on if you have a FET and only transfer frozen embies).

ICSI adds about another R10 000 if you need to go for that.

Some doctors to "natural or soft IVF cycles". This refers to them not stimulating you to harvest 10 or more eggies, but only so that you can have about 2 - 3 eggies to work with. Current research indicates that the success rates are the same, the cost is less, and the risks involved are lower. Most clinics do however still stimulate until they have 10 or more eggs, so that they can freeze for future cycles if needed.

We opted for a soft IVF cycle and it worked 2nd time around. During the first cycle I did not stimulate too well and we changed that to an IUI instead. During the 2nd cycle I had 3 follies, 2 eggies and one was transferred.
Cost: R25 000 - R28 000

Hi, girls

I have not gone for IVF yet, but it is something we are considering for the future.

The Fertility clinics vary. In Port Elizabeth they have a clinic called Fembryo. We went there for our first assessments etc. They charge R33 000 for IVF, excluding medications and freezing/storing of embryos. I am not sure if they do soft cycles.

In Cape Town, there is apparently a fertility clinic in Tygerberg provincial hospital. They charge roughly R5000 to R6000 for an IVF, but you need a referral and you need to show your proof of income. I'm assuming that if you fall in a high income bracket, that they will not provide the cheaper IVF to you. I also understand that they are supported by a larger, more expensive fertility clinic in CT.

At this stage, if we don't fall pregnant naturally this year, we will save up and consider doing IVF later this year or early 2017.

DH = 31, Low sperm count (15+ mill/ml and morphology (2 > 3%). Me = 28, with regular cycles, and period of 1 to 2 days. Overweight.

July 2014 to March 2016 - *Unsuccessful*
April 2016 - Fertomid 100mg BFP on 17/04/16!!! - Miscarried and D&C on 13/05/2016
May 2016 - Back on the TTC Wagon!

@Anzel - I am really hoping you won't need it but if you do then it looks like we will give it a try around the same time. thinking of u all the time xx

For those of you following I have a few updates:

BioArt:

Initial Consult: R1000
Low dose IVF: R35 000 (all medication, scans, aspiration, lab fee and transfer)
High dose IVF: R38 000
sperm analysis: R850
If you need specific medication it will be a little more

Genesis:

Lab Fee: R28500
Medication: R12500-R15000
Doctor's fee: Waiting to hear from them on this..

Natal Fertility Clinic/ Femway - Dr Coetsee

Clinical Fees: R17151.30
Medicaiton - R9000 - R18000
lab fee: R11 044.50

These are all just estimates and will change according to your individual case. These estimates don't include embryo/sperm/egg freezing and storage costs which could easily add a couple of thousand to your bill.

I hope this helps!

Cheeeezzzz. it's expensive! Looks like we have a few options:
  • Play the lotto
  • Rob a bank
  • Hope we inherit a lot of money
  • Save untill we have enough (This could take a while!)

LOL!

@Anzel - You are telling me!!! Thank-you for your input. I believe the Cape Town clinics are the best! The scary thing is that you could save just enough to do the ivf and then you have to store your embryos for another cycle and there goes another 10k... Its rather sickening! I think we could have enough for a cycle at the end of the year but that would mean no room for error which is unlikely... Just Pray Pray Pray!!
